Your remote for Apple TV won't respond, won't pair, or won't charge — and the show is paused mid-scene. Below are the fixes that actually work, in the order Apple support uses them, plus the fastest backup when the hardware remote gives up entirely: turn your iPhone into the remote.
Quick checks first (30 seconds)
Most "broken" remotes aren't broken. Before anything else:
- Make sure the Apple TV is powered on — the white status light on the front should be lit when you wake it.
- Move within 3–10 feet of the Apple TV. The Siri Remote uses Bluetooth, not infrared, but it still needs a reasonable signal.
- Take the Apple TV out of any closed cabinet. Wood and metal kill Bluetooth range.
1. Force restart the Siri Remote
Siri Remote (2nd gen and later, the aluminum one): hold TV/Control Center + Volume Down for about 5 seconds. The Apple TV status light should flash. Wait 10 seconds, then try the remote again.
Siri Remote (1st gen, the glass-topped one): hold Menu + Volume Up for 5 seconds instead.
2. Charge it — for real
Connect the remote with a Lightning or USB-C cable (depending on generation) to a 5W+ adapter and leave it for at least 30 minutes. A fully drained Siri Remote shows no indicator for the first few minutes of charging, which fools a lot of people into thinking the cable is broken. Try a second cable before giving up.
3. Restart the Apple TV itself
On the Apple TV go to Settings → System → Restart. Or, if the remote is completely dead, unplug the Apple TV from power, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. About a third of "remote" problems are actually the Apple TV needing a reboot.
4. Re-pair the remote
Hold the remote about 3 inches from the Apple TV, then press and hold Back (or Menu on older remotes) + Volume Up for 5 seconds. If a message appears on screen, follow it — sometimes you'll need to set the remote on top of the Apple TV.
5. Check Bluetooth interference
Other 2.4 GHz devices — microwaves, baby monitors, USB-3 hubs sitting next to the Apple TV — can stomp on the remote's signal. Move suspects, or relocate the Apple TV by a foot or two and retest.
6. Update tvOS
Outdated firmware causes remote regressions more often than you'd think. Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software. If your remote is completely unresponsive, you'll need a backup remote (see below) to get into Settings.
7. Unpair and re-pair from Settings
Settings → Remotes and Devices → Bluetooth, select the remote, choose Unpair Device, then re-pair using the method in step 4.
8. Reset the remote to factory
Last resort for the remote itself: with the remote charging, hold TV/Control Center + Volume Up for about 5 seconds, then re-pair.
9. Use your iPhone as the remote
If the hardware remote is dead, lost, or stuck behind a couch cushion, your iPhone is already a fully capable remote for Apple TV. Two options:
- Control Center remote (built-in): open Control Center, tap the Remote tile, pick your Apple TV. Works for basic navigation but it's tucked into a small tile and the directional pad can feel mushy.
- Loop Remote (recommended): a full-screen, native iPhone remote with a precise touchpad, Now Playing controls, a keyboard for sign-ins, and direct app launching. Pairs in seconds over your local Wi-Fi.
The better backup
Turn your iPhone into the remote for Apple TV you wished you had
Loop Remote replaces the Siri Remote with a precise touch surface, instant app launcher, and full keyboard — so you stop hunting for the hardware remote in the first place. Everything stays on your local network. No account. No tracking.
Still stuck? When to replace the remote
If the remote won't charge after a fresh cable and adapter, won't pair after a factory reset, or the clickpad has physical damage, Apple will service or replace it — but a replacement Siri Remote runs $59. Most people skip it and use their iPhone instead, which is the same hardware they're already holding.
Frequently asked
How do I force restart my remote for Apple TV?+
For the Siri Remote (2nd gen and later), press and hold the TV/Control Center button and the Volume Down button together for about 5 seconds until the status light on the Apple TV flashes. For the 1st-gen Siri Remote, hold Menu + Volume Up for 5 seconds.
Why won't my remote for Apple TV charge?+
Use a known-good Lightning or USB-C cable and a 5W or higher power adapter. Leave it plugged in for at least 30 minutes — a fully drained remote can take several minutes before the charging indicator appears. If nothing happens, try a different cable and outlet before assuming the battery is dead.
How do I re-pair a remote for Apple TV?+
Hold the remote about 3 inches from your Apple TV, then press and hold the Back (or Menu) button and Volume Up together for about 5 seconds. If prompted, place the remote on top of the Apple TV to complete pairing.
Can I use my iPhone as a remote for Apple TV?+
Yes. You can use Apple's built-in Remote in Control Center, or install Loop Remote for a faster, full-screen experience with Now Playing, app launcher, and keyboard input — all over your local Wi-Fi network.
My remote for Apple TV works but is unresponsive or laggy. What do I do?+
Restart the Apple TV (Settings → System → Restart), unpair and re-pair the remote, and remove anything between the remote and the Apple TV. Lag is often caused by a weak Bluetooth connection — moving the Apple TV out of an enclosed cabinet usually fixes it.
